Formed in 1970
the Lions Club of Keynsham has served
the local and wider community throughout the intervening
years in many ways. It is one of over 900 Clubs in the British Isles and
Ireland of
Lions Multiple District 105.
- Keynsham Lions provided an
extension to Red Cross House in the town which is used
for the benefit of the community.
- Keynsham Lions help those with special needs,
disabilities and learning difficulties.
- Keynsham Lions sponsor the hire of the Leisure Centre
swimming pool to provide the venue for the annual Red
Cross Seals swimming gala. They also support the Monday
Club, the Junior Gateway Club and the Avon Special
Olympics.
- Keynsham Lions have bought special equipment for
hospitals, hospices and GP practices that serve the
community.
- Keynsham Lions have provided outings for the
elderly and have supported luncheon clubs.
- Keynsham Lions help the young with skills for living.
Fighting drug abuse is one way, providing youth centre
equipment is another.
- Keynsham Lions involve themselves in the
local and international community, helping people less
fortunate than themselves. As part of the world wide
Lions Clubs International, all
Lions Clubs have been striving to eradicate preventable
blindness all over the world, funding eye camps to
restore sight. It was the Lions that gave the world the
familiar white cane used by blind people. Lions Clubs
International awarding disaster relief grants for the
Kosovo crisis, the earthquake in Turkey, the Orissa
Cyclone Tragedy and the Mozambique Flood Appeal, through
the Lions Clubs
International Foundation and have awarded Major Catastrophe
funds to aid victims of the India Earthquake which
occurred on 26th January 2001 and the summer Central
European Floods of 2002.
- Lions Clubs International Foundation provided aid
following the Iranian Earthquake on Boxing Day 2003, Hurricane Katrina in
New Orleans 2005 and the Indonesian Earthquake in
2006.
Lions Clubs
International Foundation supplied immediate aid to the Indian Ocean
Tsunami Disaster of 26th December 2004. Keynsham Lions collected £8,500
for immediate aid relief. click
Keynsham Lions have a strong social spirit which
allows for successful fund-raising throughout the year.
Over the years, the people of the town have shown respect
for the work of the Lions and have given tremendous
support.
